CONTENT AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES
We often associate cirrhosis of the liver with drinking too much alcohol, but our drinking habits aren’t the only risk factor we should be aware of.
It is estimated that one in three people in the UK and up to one billion people world-wide are affected by a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Whilst early-stages of NAFLD usually cause no harm, if the build-up of fat in the liver gets worse, it can lead to serious liver damage, including cirrhosis.
There are currently no medications available for the treatment of NAFLD, so patients rely entirely on lifestyle interventions to reverse it. It is therefore of vital importance that we understand which aspects of nutrition are key in the management of NAFLD.
