Professor Nick Panay’s biography

As director of the Menopause & PMS Centre at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital & Imperial College London, Nick leads a busy clinical and research team which publishes widely, presents at scientific meetings, and trains health professionals at all levels. He and his team of research fellows and nurses run an active research programme consisting of translational, clinical and pharmaceutically sponsored research in menopause, premature ovarian insufficiency, premenstrual syndrome, androgens and contraception.

Nick has authored more than 200 peer reviewed publications with more than 10,000 citations to date and has a Google Scholar h index of 49. He presents at numerous national and international conferences, as an invited keynote and plenary speaker.

Through his work with several societies, councils and women’s groups he campaigns actively for women’s health issues both nationally and internationally.

She has a lifelong interest in women’s health and is an ambassador for the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS), committed to raising awareness of the burden of osteoporosis.

Almost 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men will break a bone as a result of osteoporosis. These fractures can lead to loss of independence and have a huge financial and personal cost. This session will explore the link between menopause and osteoporosis and how we can educate patients on how to mitigate their risks.

Dr Zoe Schaedel’s biography

Dr Zoe Schaedel is the co-director of Myla Health, a private women’s health clinic. She is an experienced NHS GP and leads the Brighton and Hove NHS menopause clinic. She is an accredited British Menopause Society (BMS) Menopause Specialist and has a special interest in sleep medicine. As a member of the BMS Medical Advisory Council Dr Schaedel trains clinicians in menopause and she contributes to a number of national committees including the British Sleep Society education committee.

Schaedel’s papers are published in The Lancet and Post Reproductive Health. She appeared in the Channel 5 documentary Women’s Health:Breaking The Taboos and has been interviewed by a range of media organisations including Radio 4, The Independent,Grazia Magazine and Good Housekeeping.

Dr Melanie Smith’s biography

Dr Melanie Smith is a Principal Clinical Health Psychologist who has been working in the physical health field since completing her Clinical Psychology Doctorate at the University of Manchester in 2006. She was lead therapist on the MENOS 1 and 2 RCTs which delivered and evaluated the effectiveness of CBT for menopause symptoms in breast cancer and well women populations. She continues to deliver training in the biopsychosocial approach to menopause to a range of healthcare professionals in conjunction with the British Menopause Society, as well as specialist breast care nurse teams. Melanie has co-authored 3 books on CBT for menopause symptoms with Professor Myra Hunter.

expertise in primary and secondary cardiovascular risk prevention including
management of lipid disorders, novel lipid lowering therapies and hypertension
is also Principal Investigator for several clinical trials.

Although menopause does not directly cause CVD, women experience changes during the menopausal transition that can impact cardiovascular health to increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
