Following on from our webinar ‘Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Nutrition’, we have pulled together some of the key resources and references discussed within the webinar, plus some additional ones on the topic. We have also included useful websites and social media accounts recommended to keep up to date on the subject. If you missed the live webinar, you can watch the recording

Obesity: identification, assessment and management (2014), NICE. Guidelines from NICE for obesity management

RESEARCH/STUDIES

A plant-based meal reduces postprandial oxidative and dicarbonyl stress in men with diabetes or obesity compared with an energy- and macronutrient-matched conventional meal in a randomized crossover study (2021), Malinska et al. Research highlighting the herapeutic potential of plant-based nutrition in improving the progression of complications in T2D and obese patients

Evidence-based clinical advice for nutrition and dietary weight loss strategies for the management of NAFLD and NASH (2020), Hydes et al. Study supporting the evidence behind reducing saturated fat, refined carbohydrates, and red and processed meats in the diet, and increasing the consumption of plant-based foods

Effect of a Low-Fat Vegan Diet on Body Weight, Insulin Sensitivity, Postprandial Metabolism, and Intramyocellular and Hepatocellular Lipid Levels in Overweight Adults (2020), Kahleova et al. Randomised trial looking into low-fat vegan diets and body weight, insulin resistance, postprandial metabolism, and lipid levels in overweight adults

Monounsaturated fat rapidly induces hepatic gluconeogenesis and whole-body insulin resistance (2020), Sarabhaji et al. Study indicating that amount of ingested fat, rather than its composition, primarily determines the development of acute insulin resistance

Skeletal Muscle Dysfunction in the Development and Progression of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (2020), Ajatar S. J. Research into the natural history, risk stratification, and management of NAFLD

Overeating Saturated Fat Promotes Fatty Liver and Ceramides Compared With Polyunsaturated Fat: A Randomized Trial (2019), Rosqvist et al. Study showing that saturated fatty acids increase liver fat vs dietary polyunsaturated fats prevent liver fat accumulation

Relation of total sugars, fructose and sucrose with incident type 2 diabetes (2017), Tsilas et al. Systematic review and meta-analysis looking into the association between fructose-containing sugars and type 2 diabetes

Acute dietary fat intake initiates alterations in energy metabolism and insulin resistance (2017), Alverez et al. A study finding that palm oil reduces insulin sensitivity

Consumption of sugar sweetened beverages, artificially sweetened beverages, and fruit juice and incidence of type 2 diabetes (2015), Imamura F et al. Study finding that habitual consumption of sugar sweetened beverages was associated with a greater incidence of type 2 diabetes, independently of adiposity

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus: The liver disease of our age? (2014), Gabor Firneisz. A review article discussing NAFLD in detail including the epidemiology of NAFLD and the relationship of NAFLD to different forms of diabetes

Effect of fructose on markers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (2014), Chiu et. Systematic review looking into the effect of fructose on NAFLD, finding that isocaloric exchange of fructose for other carbohydrates does not induce NAFLD changes in healthy participants. The study did however, highlight that excess fructose intakes are of concern

Role of dietary fats in modulating cardiometabolic risk during moderate weight gain: a randomized double-blind overfeeding trial (LIPOGAIN study) (2014), Iggman et al. Study which found that eating muffins made with unsaturated fats were more beneficial compared to muffins made with saturated fats in terms of cardiometabolic responses

Eating two larger meals a day (breakfast and lunch) is more effective than six smaller meals in a reduced-energy regimen for patients with type 2 diabetes: a randomised crossover study (2014), Kahleova et al. Study finding that eating two larger meals a day was beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes compared to those eating six smaller meals

Vegetarian diet improves insulin resistance and oxidative stress markers more than conventional diet in subjects with Type 2 diabetes (2011), Kahleova et al. Study showing that a calorie-restricted vegetarian diet had greater capacity to improve insulin sensitivity compared with a conventional diabetic diet over 24 weeks

The role of skeletal muscle insulin resistance in the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome (2007), Peterson KF et al. Research exploring whether insulin resistance in skeletal muscle promotes the development of atherogenic dyslipidemia

Mechanisms of Disease: hepatic steatosis in type 2 diabetes–pathogenesis and clinical relevance (2006), Roden at al. Study looking into the role of ectopic fat and lower insulin sensitivity

Reversal of nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis, hepatic insulin resistance, and hyperglycemia by moderate weight reduction in patients with type 2 diabetes (2005), Peterson et al. Research highlighting that moderate weight loss leads to improvements in hyperglycaemia

Intramyocellular lipid concentrations are correlated with insulin sensitivity in humans: a 1H NMR spectroscopy study (1999), Krssak et al. Study highlighting the link between lipid concentrations and whole body insulin sensitivity in non-diabetic, non-obese humans
