CONTENT AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At present dietary therapies for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) involve a top-down approach, where all possible dietary triggers are excluded using a low FODMAP diet. This webinar explores whether we should consider using bottom-up approaches that are less restrictive and tailored to the patient to better support those living with IBS.

IBS is thought to impact at least 10-20% of people in the UK and symptoms vary in severity.

This webinar will cover the role of dietary therapies in the management of IBS and explore the latest evidence on new, less restrictive approaches including a gluten-free diet, including results of the first RCT comparing first line dietary advice, low FODMAP diet and the gluten free diet.

We’ll cover:

  • The role of dietary therapies in IBS
  • Why new, less restrictive approaches are needed
  • The emerging evidence around a gluten free diet in IBS
  • The crossover between the low FODMAP diet and the gluten free diet

We’re also joined by Gastroenterology Dietitian, Nick Trott, to chair and guide discussions during the session.

Watch this webinar to:

Gain understanding of
  • The role of dietary therapies in IBS
  • The current evidence base for less restrictive approaches and why new ways are needed
  • How individualised approaches such as a gluten free diet may be a suitable option as a bottom-up approach in the management of IBS
Be aware of
  • The emerging evidence around a gluten free diet in IBS
  • Results of the first RCT comparing first line dietary advice, low FODMAP diet and the gluten free diet
  • The crossover between the low FODMAP diet and the gluten free diet, which may be a way to reduce fructans
Be able to
  • Summarise the evidence for dietary therapies for IBS
  • Apply the evidence base for dietary therapies in IBS to help clinical practice
  • Feel more confident to try alternative approaches if suitable depending on the individual

CPD CERTIFICATE & LEARNING MATERIALS

This webinar is approved for CPD by the AfN

GI discomfort is often reported by individuals seeking nutritional support, and represents a significant market that nutritionists working within the food industry may be asked to help support. This webinar will provide an opportunity to explore emerging evidence for less restrictive approaches which can benefit individuals with reducing discomfort, whilst maximising dietary enjoyment, variety and nutrient intake.

Attendees should gain an understanding on the limitations to the current evidence base, areas for future research and suitable advice they can provide (within their scope of practice).
