For many people, low and no calorie sweeteners (LNCS) are controversial food ingredients, and there are a lot of misconceptions about their safety and their impact on health. This roundtable discussion will address recent reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) and explore the safety assessment of LNCS and the latest scientific evidence on their impact as an alternative tool in weight management.

LNCS are approved as safe by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/World Health Organization (WHO) Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), along with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other food safety bodies globally. Yet, concerns around the safety and use of them continues amongst patients and healthcare professionals alike.

For decades, LNCS have been used as a valuable approach for patients with specific health conditions, such as diabetes or obesity, but what does the latest evidence show and where can healthcare professionals find reliable information on LNCS?

In this roundtable discussion, we’ll be joined by leading experts in nutrition and food science to discuss common concerns surrounding LNCS, and answer any questions you may have.

We’ll cover:

  • The safety of LNCS
  • LNCS in relation to weight control, sweet taste and appetite
  • Recommendations on LNCS use
  • Evidence from individual studies and meta-analyses, and why different conclusions have been drawn

We’re also joined by expert chair, Duane Mellor, to guide discussions.

Katherine graduated from the University of Southampton in 1993 with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, and from the University of Leeds in 1998 with a PhD in Biological Psychology / Nutrition. Since, Katherine has worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds (1999), University of Surrey (2000-2002), University of Bristol (2002-2005) and as a lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast (2005-2012). Katherine joined Bournemouth University in Sept. 2012, following a year-long sabbatical at the University of Iowa, US. Katherine is a Chartered Psychologist (British Psychological Society, 2001) and a Registered Nutritionist (Nutrition Society, 2001).

Session Outlines and Learning Objectives

Low calorie sweeteners provide the pleasure of sweet taste without the calories associated with sugars, thus, benefits for energy intake and body weight may be expected. However, debates over the value of low calorie sweeteners for energy intake and weight-related concerns continue. This talk will detail a recent systematic review of randomised controlled trials investigating the sustained consumption of low calorie sweeteners for effects on energy intake and body weight, discuss the evidence from similar reviews, and finally discuss these findings in light of current guidelines on low-calorie sweeteners including the new guidelines from the WHO.
