There is considerable controversy surrounding the safe use of sweeteners in the diet, including for diabetes management. This webinar is designed to provide the very latest evidence on the role of sweeteners and sweetness in diabetes management to help healthcare professionals give practical and evidence-based advice.

Although all sweeteners used in the UK and Europe have undergone rigorous safety testing, controversy surrounding their use remains. This confusion amongst both patients and professionals can be explained by the inconsistent and sometimes contradictory information that is presented in relation to their safety, role in weight management and links to other health conditions.

In this webinar, Registered Dietitian, Duane Mellor, shares the latest and emerging data on the health effects of sweeteners and how they may be able to provide a helpful tool for some individuals living with diabetes.

Douglas Twenefour's biography

Douglas Twenefour is the Head of Care at Diabetes UK. As a Specialist Dietitian, his specialist interest is in developing evidence-based guidelines. Douglas co-chaired the Diabetes UK 2018 nutrition guidelines for the prevention and management of diabetes. He co-chaired the joint Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN)/ Diabetes UK/ NHS working group reviewing the evidence to inform a national position on the use of low carbohydrate diets in people with Type 2 diabetes. He enjoys teaching, and is an Associate Lecturer at the London Metropolitan University. Douglas has also worked with several international Universities and academic institutions as a lecturer, consultant, and a researcher.

Tanya Haffner's biography

Tanya is an Irish born, UK trained dietitian and nutritionist. She previously founded Nutrilicious Communications, the first solely dedicated nutrition communications agency in the UK, which has supported multiple change agents in food and health over 20 years. Now, the culmination of her mission to help everyone to eat well is the award winning MyNutriWeb.com, which uses all her experience and network, curating and running authentic influential learning and dialogue events, including traditional conferences, policy, networking, and training opportunities. Supporting and empowering all health professionals and other change agents in food with nutrition matters is in Tanya’s view, critical to improving citizens health whilst also helping to protect our planet. Tanya was awarded the Caroline Walker Trust Award for Freelance Nutritionist of the Year 2021 which recognises distinctive and outstanding work in promoting public health which maintains and advances the standards of food and nutrition. Tanya has recently taken up the role of chair of the BDA Sustainable diets group and is looking forward to working with the BDA to help advance the professions impact on sustainable eating.
