Ahead of World Osteoporosis Day 2021, this webinar will help health and nutrition professionals to raise awareness of important messages about bone health, and provide clients and patients with practical tips, supporting them to look after their bones. We will be focusing on considerations around exercise and physical activity, body mass index (BMI) and vegan diets.

  • Why it is important to empower clients and patients to look after their bones, providing guidance around physical activity and BMI
  • How to provide practical tips about bone-friendly physical activity and guidance about BMI
  • Why it is important to help people who choose a vegan diet to follow bone health guidance
  • How to provide practical tips about nutrients that deserve special attention in relation to vegan diets and bone health, including guidance around fortified foods and supplementation

After training to be a dietitian, Heather worked in the NHS from 2010 to 2016. She is now using her dietetic skills to support the work of The Vegan Society, which includes delivering evidence-based education to health professionals, students and a variety of other audiences.

Sarah Leyland
Clinical Advisor, Royal Osteoporosis Society

Sarah Leyland is an Osteoporosis Specialist Nurse currently working as a clinical adviser with the Royal Osteoporosis Society. With a background in rheumatology and gynaecology, Sarah has worked for over 20 years at the charity. She previously developed and managed the specialist nurse led helpline and information service, and she continues to train and supervise staff and advise on osteoporosis and bone health information.

Sarah has worked on a number of specific projects at the Royal Osteoporosis Society in recent years. This has included the development of an Expert Consensus Statement on the role of Physical Activity and Exercise for Osteoporosis and a range of new information resources for the public. As part of her current work, Sarah is a member of the Study Management Team for Dr Zoe Paskins’ IFRAP project at Keele University, which is developing and testing a computerised shared decision-making tool to improve patient understanding and adherence to osteoporosis drug treatments.
