Part 1 covers more of the causal role of LDL-C in atherosclerosis and the effect of diet on LDL-C.
Part 2 continues with the effect of diet on LDL-C and also focuses on diet and CVD risk
CONTENT AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Evidence for the ‘lower is better’ treatment model for LDL-C
- Current evidence for dietary intervention, including dietary patterns and specific nutrients
- Considerations for at-risk groups (menopausal women, younger adults and people living with diabetes, overweight and obesity or family history of CVD/CHD) that could benefit from a cholesterol lowering diet sooner rather than later
By attending Part 1 and Part 2 you will
GAIN CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF:
- Effects of LDL on CVD/CHD Risk
- All dietary influence on LDL
- Diet and CVD/CHD outcomes, including research demonstrating the impact of early prevention and cholesterol lowering on risk of CVD later in life
BE AWARE OF:
- Considerations for specific population groups
- Target levels to achieve risk reduction
- International guidelines on dyslipidaemia management (including plant stanols as part of a healthy diet) and in combination with cholesterol lowering drug treatment e.g. 2019 ESC/EAS Guidelines
- The importance of getting cholesterol levels checked
- Nutritional supplements for LDL as proposed by the 2019 EAS/ESC guidelines
BE ABLE TO:
- Identify risk factors that can increase risk of CVD in later life
- Describe cumulative effect of LDL on CVD/CHD risk
- Describe mechanisms by which diet influences CVD/CHD and provide practical lifestyle and dietary advice to help lower cholesterol, particularly LDL cholesterol
- Describe differences in risk between specific population groups

Alan is the founder of Alinea Nutrition, an online education hub dedicated to providing science-based nutrition analysis for healthcare professionals. Alan is also Research Communication Officer for Sigma Nutrition.
