CONTENT AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The importance of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels is not always top of mind, but should we all be paying attention sooner rather than later for healthier ageing?
 
The cholesterol figure patients receive from their doctor is a culmination of all types of cholesterol, including high-density lipoproteins (HDL-C) and low-density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDL-C). But it’s the LDL-C we should be reducing, since it’s the number one causal risk factor for atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD).
 
The effect of elevated LDL-C is cumulative over the course of the lifespan, which is why maintaining lower LDL-C levels from an earlier age significantly reduces risk for CVD.
 
In this webinar, we’ll be covering:
  • Evidence for the ‘lower is better’ treatment model for LDL-C
  • Current evidence for dietary intervention, including dietary patterns and specific nutrients
  • Considerations for at-risk groups (menopausal women, younger adults and people living with diabetes, overweight and obesity or family history of CVD/CHD) that could benefit from a cholesterol lowering diet sooner rather than later

  • International guidelines on dyslipidaemia management (including plant stanols as part of a healthy diet) and in combination with cholesterol lowering drug treatment e.g. 2019 ESC/EAS Guidelines
  • The importance of getting cholesterol levels checked
  • Nutritional supplements for LDL as proposed by the 2019 EAS/ESC guidelines
BE ABLE TO:
  • Identify risk factors that can increase risk of CVD in later life
  • Describe cumulative effect of LDL on CVD/CHD risk
  • Describe mechanisms by which diet influences CVD/CHD and provide practical lifestyle and dietary advice to help lower cholesterol, particularly LDL cholesterol
  • Describe differences in risk between specific population groups
